Head Of The Charles takes place the third weekend in October. It has been going on since 1965. 11,000 athletes from around the world come to Cambridge ,Somerville, and Back Bay and take part in over 55 race events over a two-day period. The City of Cambridge, Somerville, and parts of Back Bay are front and center during one weekend. Head Of The Charles showcase all walks of life. You have men and women who had the opportunity to be in Brazil and take part in the Olympic Games, and then you could have the college student who rows and if that wasn’t enough you have people who could be your grandparents that are competing no different then the 20 something or 30 something. Cambridge, Somerville, and Back Bay are only the support role the star of the event besides the athletes that push themselves are the Charles River.
Anyone who lives in Cambridge, Somerville and Back Bay your patience will be tested since the population swells to levels only
seen during graduation. Even though there are crowds of people along the banks of the Charles, and in the streets, sidewalks and in every restaurant it is truly a unique event that many residents mark their calendars not to get out of town but to take part in it by tailgating, cheering on their favorite rower or team. You can also find Alumni from Harvard, MIT, and Tufts gathering to just catch up with friends. If you haven’t checked out this world-class event you really should check it out, and if you dare you might be able to map out a new place to live, but I would keep the goals to bare minimum since house hunting in the area might not be ideal. Thinking about calling Cambridge, Back Bay or Somerville home contact me and let’s get to work on starting that search.
