It’s officially the new year and like every New Year, new trends emerge and another fall out of favor in many areas but especially design. If you’re thinking about selling your home or maybe you just want to freshen the look of your home here what might be on the design trend in 2017 and what might be considered falling out of favor. Some of the items on this list you might not agree with the interior design experts and others you might say thank god. 1) Mid Century Modern
Madmen have been off the air now for two years and the retro-cool design is starting to appear outdated. If you have a ton of original old pieces don’t throw them out since like fashion everything will reappear and down the road and often times you can mix old within.
2) Shiplap
All right if you ever have watched HGTV Fixer Upper you know the two hosts love shiplap. Shiplap in 2016 was used everywhere and designers are saying it on its way out and going for cute to quaint to dated and overused. If you are living in a barn or farmhouse and wanting to stick to the period of the home then fine use shiplap but if your putting it in a home that normally wouldn’t see it in the time it was built don’t put it in.
3) Barn Door Sliders
Personally, I don’t think this look will ever go out of fashion if it’s used right it can really bring a lot of character to a home, but the interior designer experts said it’s on its way out. The idea of Barn Door Sliders came into play with spaces that couldn’t fit a door that swings one way or another, and I am not an interior designer but I think it could still be used as the purpose for someone who doesn’t want a space to be an open space. If you use the Barn Door Slider use it in moderation and try to make it as simple and clean and possible.
4) All White Kitchen
All White Kitchen I can’t tell you how many homes I have toured where my buyer and I saw all white kitchens. Personally, I always found looking at the all-white kitchen as cold and sterile not warm and inviting. The look is on its way out and the reason why designers say the look is on its way out is due to the fact people use their kitchen and often times is the highest traffic area of the home and white shows every mess, ever stain. In 2017 buyers will see more depth and tone with darker cabinets, backsplashes, and contrast in colors. I am sure some folks will be unhappy to see this look go out of fashion, but as an agent, I am super happy this trend is exiting out and hopefully we will begin to see kitchens that have some individual style again.
5) Copper
Decorating a home with Copper will be exiting out in 2017. In 2017 you will start to see homes that have fewer copper aspects in their homes. You might see a copper bath rack or a copper table but you will not see it be used as much when decorating the home
6) The Color Gray
Designers are predicting 2017 will be the year of color so expect to see homes that have a color scheme that goes beyond gray and white. Some Designers believe we will see more mocha, taupe and some gray but not used as much as it has been in homes of the past.
7) Monochronic Design
monochromatic color palettes that evoked the stark, contemporary minimalism of our friends near the North Pole. But living rooms with off-white walls, floors in another off-white, and neutral furniture could go the way of the shag carpet. And it’s not just whites and neutrals that are to blame. Even rich hues can lose their luster if they’re plastered uniformly across every surface.
8) Glam Look
Bold whites, bright silvers, and deep blacks took over our kitchens and bathrooms. But next year’s color explosion means this luxe look might be no more.That slick, stark, severe minimalism will be replaced with warmer elements
9) Carrara Marble
Like the all-white kitchen, the Carrara Marble is exiting out in 2017 and the reason why homeowners who put it in their homes are realizing its a high maintenance material to maintain. Marble Stains easily and if you have a family they are bound to do some damage. The homeowner is realizing there are other materials that are more family-friendly and require less upkeep like quartz, soapstone even granite.
10) The Industrial look
That slick, stark, severe minimalism will be replaced with warmer elements. The Industrial look won’t completely take a departure but in 2017 you will see less warehouse look with softer fabrics and finishes.
There are a few takeaways to think about when updating your home. Don’t do every single trend in 2017 pick one or two to do and a couple to do away with. These are all trends and every trend has a shelf life. If your thinking about selling if you think about creating clean lines and pick a color scheme that works with most people furniture then you will find your home might not look as dated over time, but if you go for a look like Mad Men or decorate your home with loud colors in an art deco style your home might look more dated faster. Don’t go crazy on design trends, but realize what is on trend now will fall out of favor and if you’re lucky you can keep it for a few years, but sometimes it becomes less desirable in less time and could be short as a year.
