South End

The South End is a neighborhood that borders Back Bay, Chinatown, and Roxbury. The South End has the largest intact of Victorian Row Homes in the country. When you’re in the South End you will find very little big named box commercial companies in the area. You often find mom and pop small business from the cafes to restaurants. The biggest well-known brands you can find in the South End are Starbucks and Cafe Nero or maybe a CVS. There are eleven parks in the neighborhood. In 1973 the South End made the National Register of Historical places. The Development of the South End Started in 1849 and was built on tidal marshes.

Diversity is one the best word that describes the South End. Immigrants, families, professionals, gay and lesbian along with many different races can be found in the South End. Another word that best describes this neighborhood is a sense of community it is not uncommon to have your neighbor talk to you and if people haven’t seen you in the neighborhoods not uncommon for someone to ask you a few questions. Its done in a friendly spirit but there is a true sense of community in the South End that you might not find everywhere in Boston.

South End has deep roots in Jazz music and up until the 1950’s the South End was jazz mecca such as the Royal Palms, Eddie Levine’s, the Pioneer Club, Handy’s Grille, Tic-Toc, Connolly’s, Estelle’s, the Hi-Hat, The Savoy, The Cave, Basin Street, Louie’s Lounge, and Wally’s Paradise. The only one that has survived is Wally but is not in its original location. It eventually moved across the street.

South end offers a variety of architecture styles Italianate style; Greek revival, Renaissance Revival and Second Empire can all be found at the south end

Today’s the area is often recognized for having some of the best restaurants and cafes and none of them are big commercial names they all are small local businesses. You can find almost every single type of food when grabbing a bite to eat in the South End. I often say to my friends make a list but once you get through your list expect a restaurant or two on your list to change their menu or change names with new owners. Nothing in the South End food scene gets old it’s always changing which makes is a great place for foodies to keep coming back to.
